Rewrite Your Story at BraveMind Counseling

Welcome to Brave Mind Counseling You were never meant to carry all of this alone. Maybe you've spent years feeling like you had to earn your place in the world. Maybe you've become the dependable one, the overachiever, the people-pleaser, or the person everyone else leans on. Maybe you've wondered why life seems to take so much more effort than it appears to for everyone else. I believe therapy isn't about finding what's "wrong" with you—it's about understanding the experiences that shaped you and reconnecting with the person you've always been underneath survival mode. My role is to create a space where you can safely process trauma, understand your mind with compassion, and build a life that feels authentic rather than performative. I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ adults, neurodivergent adults, and survivors of trauma using evidence-based, trauma-focused approaches including EMDR therapy, while integrating principles from Internal Family Systems (IFS). Whether you're healing from complex trauma, exploring your identity, questioning whether you're autistic, or simply exhausted from holding everything together, we'll tailor therapy to your unique strengths, nervous system, and way of thinking—not force you into a one-size-fits-all approach. My goal isn't to help you become someone different. It's to help you become more fully yourself. --- EMDR Trauma Therapy Trauma changes the way the brain stores memories. Even when you logically know you're safe, your nervous system may continue reacting as though the danger is still happening. You may experience anxiety, panic, chronic shame, nightmares, emotional numbness, perfectionism, difficulty trusting others, or the feeling that you're constantly "on guard." As an EMDR-trained therapist, I help clients process traumatic memories so they become experiences that happened to you—not experiences that continue to control you. EMDR allows the brain to reprocess distressing memories without requiring you to repeatedly relive every detail. Together, we'll help your nervous system move from surviving to truly living. Whether your experiences stem from childhood trauma, relationship abuse, religious trauma, medical trauma, discrimination, or other overwhelming life events, healing is possible. --- LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy You deserve therapy where you never have to explain or defend who you are. As an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist, I provide a space where your identity is respected, celebrated, and understood. Together we can work through anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, family dynamics, minority stress, coming out, gender exploration, life transitions, or simply navigating a world that hasn't always felt safe. Therapy should be one place where you don't have to educate your therapist before you can begin healing. My office is a place where you can show up exactly as you are. --- Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy You don't need to become "less autistic" or "less ADHD." You deserve support that works with your brain—not against it. Many neurodivergent adults have spent years masking, wondering why everyday life feels harder than it seems for everyone else. Together, we'll better understand how your nervous system works, identify your strengths, reduce burnout, improve emotional regulation, and build practical strategies that actually fit your life. Our work is never about changing who you are. It's about helping you understand yourself with greater compassion while building a life that honors the way your mind naturally works. --- Adult Autism Assessment Have you spent years wondering if autism explains experiences you've had your entire life? I offer comprehensive master's-level autism assessments for adults using evidence-informed evaluation methods, including the MIGDAS-2 Diagnostic Interview System. The assessment process explores developmental history, sensory experiences, communication style, interests, executive functioning, masking, and lived experience to help determine whether autism best explains your experiences. Many adults seek assessment because they want clarity—not because they want to be "fixed." Understanding your neurotype can be an incredibly validating step toward self-understanding and self-acceptance. Following your evaluation, we'll discuss your results in depth and, if appropriate, explore recommendations for accommodations, workplace supports, college success strategies, sensory needs, and treatment planning that reflects your unique strengths. **Please note:** A master's-level autism assessment may be appropriate for personal understanding and may assist with requests for workplace or college accommodations when accepted by the receiving institution or employer. Requirements vary, and some schools or employers may request an evaluation from a psychologist or physician. These assessments generally are **not** accepted as the sole documentation for Medicaid eligibility or disability benefit applications. If those are your goals, I'm happy to help you understand what additional documentation may be needed and coordinate referrals when appropriate. --- Trauma, Identity, and Healing For many people, trauma and neurodivergence are deeply intertwined. Living in a world that wasn't built for your brain—or feeling unseen because of your identity—can shape the way you see yourself long before you realize it. Healing isn't about becoming someone else. It's about understanding why your mind adapted the way it did, honoring the strengths those adaptations gave you, and learning that you no longer have to survive every moment of your life. You already have a brave mind. Together, we'll help you reconnect with it. -------------------------------------------------------------------- About Me Hi, I'm Ashleigh (though most people call me "Ash")! I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington, specializing in Mental Health and Substance Use, and have been fortunate to work in inpatient psychiatric care, community mental health, and private practice. My path into this field began when a therapist told me, "You're not broken." Those words have stayed with me and continue to guide how I show up for my clients. I’m passionate about helping people understand themselves, reconnect with their strengths, and realize that healing isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about embracing your most authentic self. Outside the office, you’ll usually find me curled up with a good book or spending time with my two dogs, who keep life fun and remind me to slow down now and then. google-site-verification: googlee2405076e7997bc3.html
